Nottingham Forest striker Awoniyi misses out on PL POTM to Tottenham midfielder
Published: September 15, 2023Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has missed out on the Premier League Player of the Month award for August 2023.
The Premier League announced on Friday that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has won the award for August.after seeing off competition from Awoniyi and four other contenders.
The other nominees were Manchester City midfielder Rodri, Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo, Brighton & Hove Albion forward Kaoru Mitoma and West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.
Awoniyi has had a fine start to the 2023-2024 Premier League, scoring in all the matches played by Nottingham Forest in August.
The 26-year-old continued his rich ven of form in September as he provided the game-winning assist in Nottingham Forest's 1-0 win at Chelsea, before getting on the scoresheet last weekend in a 6-0 hammering of São Tomé and Príncipe in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Awoniyi would have become the fifth different Nigerian player to win the Premier League Player of the Month if had been chosen.
Previous Nigerian winners of the award include Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Peter Odemwingie (3), Odion Ighalo and Kelechi Iheanacho.
2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner, Awoniyi was voted Nottingham Forest's Player of the Month for August and also won the club's Goal of the Month award for his run and finish against Manchester United.
