Ex-Super Eagles striker blames one Sheffield United player for Tottenham's history-making goal
Published: September 16, 20231994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning striker with the Super Eagles, Efan Ekoku has blamed Sheffield United's Bosnian central defender Anel Ahmedhodzic for being at fault for Tottenham Hotspur's dramatic winner in the tenth minute of stoppage time in a Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.
Super Eagles-eligible left-back Destiny Udogie, who pulled out of the Italy U21 squad due to illness, was fit enough to take to the pitch against the Blades and went the distance in back-to-back games for the first time in his Premier League career.
Sheffield United looked like they were going to secure their first win since promotion when Gustavo Hamer gave them the lead with seventeen minutes of regulation time left, but Tottenham Hotspur had other ideas.
Richarlison, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, sent a near post header into the net, and Dejan Kulusevski put Tottenham Hotspur ahead with a fantastic finish in the 100th minute.
According to the statisticians at OPTA, Tottenham's victory against Sheffield United is the latest winning comeback by a side in Premier League history, surpassing their own record (95th min v Leicester in January 2022).
Reacting to Tottenham Hotspur's historic goal, Ekoku, who was on commentary duties for the Premier League world feed said: "So much time and space in the box. Anel Ahmedhodzic, he's got to give that some ball some air. Another 15 or 20 yards, play it towards the corner flag. He put Cameron Archer in a terrible position.
"Once Kulusevski gets the ball onto his right foot, not his stronger side, there's a little bit of luck, that's football for you, through the legs. Jack Robinson, who's been terrific today for Sheffield United, on his knees, cannot believe it. Goalkeeper has got no chance."
Tottenham Hotspur are unbeaten in five Premier League matches under new boss Ange Postecoglou and are second in the standings with 13 points, two less than champions Manchester City who came from behind too to beat West Ham United.
