Nephew of former Super Eagles star helps Chelsea keep clean sheet on full PL debut
Published: September 17, 2023Lesley Ugochukwu, the nephew of retired Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam, was handed his first Premier League start for Chelsea in their barren draw with Bournemouth on matchday five of the Premier League played at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The 19-year-old was deployed as a defensive midfielder in the game, playing alongside Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernández as Chelsea kept their second clean sheet in this season's Premier League.
He lasted the whole duration of the encounter as Chelsea struggled to find the back of the net and record their second league victory of the season.
The former Rennes midfielder had 55 touches, recorded 1 key pass and 85 % pass accuracy, won just 1 of the 5 ground duels he contested and won two of his aerial duels in what can be termed an average performance.
Ugochukwu becomes the second Nigerian to start a league game for the London-based club this season with Carney Chukwuemeka being the other.
He has now made four appearances across all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino's side since the start of this campaign.
Chelsea alum Dominic Solanke, fresh from signing a new deal with Bournemouth, played the full game.
