'I hit the post' - Two-goal hero Dessers defends himself after missed chances in Rangers win v Ross County
Published: February 15, 2024Cyriel Dessers has defended himself after spurning several scoring opportunities in the first half of Rangers' 3-1 win over Ross County in a Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Light Blues are back in the title race after winning eleven of their last twelve games in the division and have been installed as favorites to win the league considering the fact that their bitter rivals Celtic have not been convincing since the start of the year.
Against Ross County, Dessers opened the scoring in the 5th minute, lifting his effort over George Wickens, but then Rangers got pegged back as Simon Murray restored parity just before the half-hour mark.
The Nigeria international directed his header into the bottom corner in first half stoppage time and John Souttar scored right at the death to ensure three points for Rangers.
Of the eight shots registered by Dessers in the first half, five were on target but only two ended up in the back of the net.
Defending his efficiency in front of goal, the Super Eagles star put it down to hard luck, saying he was unfortunate to hit the post and another of his effort was cleared off the line.
Summing up his first half, Dessers told reporters at the post-match press conference: "When you go in with a goal 30 seconds before halftime it's obviously a good feeling. I think I played a good first half, when you come in these positions that's what he gaffer wants but obviously a little bit unlucky as well.
"I made a good goal with my first chance then I hit the post. I did everything well in that action, I hit the post next ball, I think I did everything well again but then it's cleared off the line so that's a little bit unlucky.
"I'm happy to get a second goal right before halftime and then you can go in with a good feeling."
After an indifferent start to his career at Ibrox, Dessers is back in the groove with 21 goal involvements (14 goals, 7 assist) in 36 all-competition appearances so far this season.
