'It is like another rivalry' - Super Eagles playmaker Iwobi vows to give 100 percent against Black Stars
Published: March 21, 2024Alex Iwobi is hoping that the Super Eagles can pick it up from where they left it at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as they gear up for consecutive friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.
The Fulham midfielder hasn't worn the Super Eagles jersey since their defeat to Ivory Coast in the AFCON final.
Despite being tipped as one of the key players for the three-time African champions heading to the competition, the Hale End Academy product was largely underwhelming.
His indifferent performances led to a barrage of criticisms, some overly excessive, after the conclusion of AFCON but the former Everton midfielder hasn't been deterred by it.
He has gone on to play consistently well for Fulham in the Premier League, scoring a late winner against Manchester United last month and also scored an historic goal in their loss to Wolves.
Having resumed to the Marrakech-based camp, Iwobi has spoken ahead of the Super Eagles with the Black Stars on Friday.
The Fulham midfielder has expressed his excitement to be back on international duty as they prepare for the forthcoming games on Friday and next Monday respectively.
"Because it was in-season, we had to go straight back to club football. We haven't heard much time to reflect but of course you want to continue the form you had at AFCON and hopefully push on and make things great again," Iwobi said,
On what is being said in the squad ahead of the clash with Ghana, the 27-year-old spoke about the awareness of the rivalry with the 2010 World Cup quarterfinalist.
"Of course, it is like another rivalry against one of the nations that is close to us. So, we will give our full 100% to try and get the result we want"
