20 goals in WCQs: Afcon-winning coach Le Roy suggests Super Eagles attack is overrated

1988 Afcon-winning coach Claude Le Roy has raised doubts about the true strength of Nigeria’s Super Eagles attack, despite the team scoring 20 goals in 12 World Cup qualifying matches including the playoffs.

The French tactician emphasized that goal tallies alone do not reflect offensive effectiveness, particularly as the team prepares for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to Canal +, Le Roy said: “When you don't qualify for the World Cup and you are Nigeria. I'm not impressed by the statistics of 20 goals in 12 matches with the offensive potential they have.”

The veteran French coach argued that the numbers should not be celebrated given the quality of opposition faced during the qualifiers.

Le Roy stressed that many of Nigeria’s goals came against teams he described as far from elite, saying: “It's not against irresistible teams but Benin and Gabon so we need to put things into perspective.”

He added that the failure to secure a place at the World Cup underlines a deeper issue, despite the presence of high-profile attacking players.

The 77-year-old also warned that the disappointment of missing out on the global tournament would directly affect the preparation of head coach Éric Chelle ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

According to him, “The elimination handicaps him (Chelle) greatly in his preparation for this Afcon.”

Nigeria’s attack has been a major talking point in recent months, with several forwards among the continent’s most highly rated.

However, the failure to convert their scoring record into a World Cup ticket has intensified scrutiny ahead of the forthcoming Afcon.

Le Roy’s remarks add further pressure on Chelle, who is expected to refine the team’s attacking structure and restore confidence before the continental championship begins.
