Afcon 2025 countdown: Super Eagles move base from Cairo to Fez

Players and officials of the Super Eagles will depart Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday afternoon for Fez, Morocco, as preparations intensify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team, which opened camp in Cairo on Sunday, is scheduled to leave by midday following the arrival of all 28 invited players to camp.

During their stay in Egypt, the Super Eagles held a series of training sessions and played an international friendly against the Pharaohs as part of their build-up to the biennial tournament.

Nigeria suffered a 2–1 defeat to Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium, marking head coach Éric Chelle’s first loss since he assumed duty earlier in the year.

Despite the result, the encounter provided valuable match fitness and tactical insight ahead of the continental showpiece.

Upon arrival in Morocco, the team is expected to hold a training session later in the evening, tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.

Nigeria will begin their AFCON campaign in Group C against Tanzania on December 23, face Tunisia on December 27, and conclude the group stage against Uganda on December 30.

Chelle will be aiming to steer the Super Eagles to a fourth AFCON title in Morocco, as the team looks to restore pride and confidence following the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
