Afcon 2025: Five Tanzania troublemakers the Super Eagles must tame on Tuesday evening

The Super Eagles  will begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign today with a Group C clash against Tanzania.

While Nigeria enter the contest as favourites, the Taifa Stars have several players capable of influencing the game. Here are five Tanzania players Nigeria must contain in the tournament opener:

1. Mbwana Samatta (Striker & Captain)

Samatta leads the line for Tanzania and serves as the team’s captain. The experienced striker brings leadership, composure, and a proven goalscoring record at international level. His intelligent movement inside the box and ability to hold up play make him a constant threat, especially during counter-attacks and set-pieces.

2. Simon Msuva (Forward)

One of Tanzania’s most capped players, Msuva provides pace, direct running, and experience from years abroad. His ability to drift into dangerous areas and take on defenders one-on-one could test Nigeria’s full-backs, particularly if the Super Eagles push high up the pitch.

3. Feisal Salum (Midfielder)

Salum operates as the key link between defence and attack. The creative midfielder dictates tempo, initiates attacking moves, and can unlock defences with his vision and passing range. Containing Salum is crucial to disrupting Tanzania’s rhythm and limiting their attacking threats.

4. Mohamed Hussein (Left-Back)

Hussein anchors Tanzania’s defence from the left side. Strong in the air and tactically aware, he combines defensive solidity with the ability to support attacks down the flank. His positioning and leadership at the back are vital, particularly against Nigeria’s pacey and dynamic forwards. Neutralising Hussein will be essential to gaining control in the attacking third.

5. Haji Mnoga (Right-Back/Defender)

Haji Suleiman Haji Ali Mnoga is a versatile and experienced defender who plays as a right-back for EFL League Two side Salford City. Born in England, he represents the Tanzania national team. Mnoga’s physical presence, defensive discipline, and ability to support transitions make him an important player for the Taifa Stars. Keeping him under control will prevent Tanzania from exploiting space in counter-attacks.

As Nigeria aim for a winning start in Group C, containing these five players will be essential to asserting control and avoiding an early setback.
