'Ajayi, Nwabali and I did a good job' - Bassey on clean sheet, preferred quarterfinal opponent, Nigeria fans

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has insisted that Nigeria’s focus remains firmly on preparation and concentration following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique, which secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the match, Bassey played down talk of revenge or preferred opponents, stressing that readiness and discipline are paramount at this stage of the tournament.

When asked whether the Super Eagles would prefer a revenge clash against DR Congo or a fresh encounter with Algeria, Bassey was clear in his response.

He said, “For us, it doesn’t matter. You know, we at this stage and every team’s strong, every team’s good. So far it's just about making sure whoever we’re playing, we’re prepared.”

Bassey also revealed that the coaching staff have been working closely with the players on key moments within matches, particularly concentration levels late in games.

He explained, “I’m pleased. I mean, he said there was only a few details, you know, that we needed. We had conceded in the 70th minute, around the 70th minute in both games, I believe, 70th, 74th.”

The Fulham defender added that maintaining focus during those critical periods is essential, saying, “So he’s just making sure when it gets to that time, everyone’s got to stay focused.”

He emphasized his responsibility at the back, noting, “It’s making sure that me being able to see everything, I’m able to put people in the right position.”

Bassey praised the defensive organization during the match, highlighting the teamwork among the back line and goalkeeper.

He said, “I think Semi (Ajayi), Stanley (Nwabali), and I did a good job of trying to organise everyone.”

Nigeria kept their first clean sheet of the tournament against Mozambique.

Beyond the performance on the pitch, Bassey reserved special praise for Nigerian supporters who traveled to Morocco to back the team.

Describing their impact, he said, “They’re unbelievable, man. They were dancing, singing all game and we really appreciate it.”

He added that the fans’ energy played a crucial role in motivating the players, saying, “It gingers us and gets us ready. It also fuels us. So, we appreciate the support.”

As Nigeria prepares for the quarter-finals in Marrakesh, Bassey’s comments reflect a squad grounded in focus, collective responsibility, and gratitude for the backing they continue to receive from supporters, both at home and abroad.
