Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has expressed his admiration for Nigerian central defender Honest Ahanor following his impressive display in the club’s 2–1 victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Ahanor, who joined the Bergamo-based side from Genoa during the summer transfer window, has continued to make steady progress at Atalanta and is increasingly seen as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
Despite his tender age, the 17-year-old has already featured prominently this season, scoring one goal in 12 appearances across all competitions.
The highly rated youngster was introduced in the 71st minute against Chelsea, replacing former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac, as Atalanta secured the victory at the New Balance Arena - Bergamo
Ahanor rose to the occasion, producing a composed and disciplined performance in the closing stages of the encounter.
During his 19-minute cameo, the teenager recorded one successful tackle, won an aerial duel and came out on top in a ground duel, contributing decisively to Atalanta’s ability to see out the contest and secure a memorable Champions League victory.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Atalanta’s upcoming Serie A clash against Cagliari, Palladino was full of praise for the youngster’s attitude and application.
"He's a talent we need to nurture. He had a great game against Chelsea, and I really like his spirit: his boldness and his willingness to give 110% of every opportunity he gets," Palladino was quoted as saying by Tuttoatalanta.
The versatile defender will now be hoping to build on his recent performances and earn more minutes as Atalanta turn their focus back to domestic duties, with Cagliari next on Saturday.
