Daniel Oyegoke has explained why he turned down the chance to join West Ham United prior to signing schoolboy forms with Arsenal at the age of fourteen.
The fullback was on the brink of signing for the Hammers before the Gunners convinced him to join the club.
After four years at the Arsenal academy, Oyegoke joined Brentford in a permanent deal in the summer transfer window, signing a three-year deal with a club option of a further season.
Originally a striker when he arrived from fellow north London club Barnet, the Anglo-Nigerian was converted to a defender on the recommendation of Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker.
Speaking to The Sun UK this week, Oyegoke said : "It was a dream come true. I was a bit star struck but on my first game I played Charlton and scored two goals. It worked out like a fairy-tale.
"I went away with them to Holland a week later and played against Ajax and to this day it’s the best team I have ever played against."
During his time at Arsenal, Oyegoke made eleven appearances in the Premier League 2 and seventeen in the U18 Premier League, scoring one goal against Fulham in November 2019.
He has played non-binding games for England at U16, U17, U18 and U19 levels.
