'Clever finish' - First Chelsea captain in PL era hails Arokodare after goal against Arsenal

Chelsea's first captain in the Premier League era Andy Townsend praised Tolu Arokodare's finishing after the Super Eagles striker scored his first Premier League goal in Wolverhampton Wanderers' 2–1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night.

Townsend was on commentary duty for the Premier League world feed and highlighted the quality of the move and the execution of the finish.

"They kept the ball really well, let's be honest, give them some credit. They brought it in a good areas," Townsend said during the broadcast monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com

Commenting on the build-up and the decisive touch, he added: "He's clearly onside, you can see Hincapié, he's goalside of Arokodare. It's a pacy, flat delivery. Nobody can get there, it's just what the big man wants, he puts a clever finish on that.

"It's a fast delivery, it's a flick header, goes past David Raya right down the middle of the goal."

Arokodare’s goal marked a personal milestone, as the Nigerian forward opened his Premier League account despite Wolves leaving north London empty-handed.

Arsenal had taken the lead in the 70th minute through a Sam Johnstone own goal, putting the hosts in control of the contest.

The 25-year-old striker was introduced from the bench in the 69th minute as Wolves searched for a goal.

His impact was immediate, as he provided a focal point in attack and posed problems for Arsenal's defence with his physical presence.

Wolves eventually found an equaliser late in the game when Arokodare rose to meet a cross from Mateus Mané in the 90th minute.

The former Genk forward produced a well-timed header to level the score, registering his first goal in English Premier League and briefly silencing the Emirates crowd.

Despite the late equaliser, Wolves were unable to hold on, as Arsenal went on to score a late winner to secure a 2–1 victory.

The strike came after a challenging start to life in the English Premier League for the Nigerian forward.

Arokodare was not included in Eric Chelle's final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite initially being named in the 54-man provisional roster.
