Confirmed: Chelsea sign Nigeria-eligible defender from Sheffield Wednesday

With a statement on the official website, Premier League side Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Nigeria-eligible 17-year-old left-back Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday, with the defender agreeing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.

The Premier League side completed the deal after reaching an agreement with Sheffield Wednesday, beating three other top-flight clubs to secure Alao’s signature.

Alao has been with Sheffield Wednesday since joining the club’s academy at U7 level, progressing through the ranks to earn senior opportunities.

His development culminated in a first-team debut against Bolton Wanderers in August 2025.

During the current season, the left-back received multiple first-team call-ups and featured across several competitions, including the Championship, the Carabao Cup, and the FA Cup. He made his first senior start in an FA Cup match against Premier League side Brentford, playing for an hour in a 2–0 defeat.

The defender’s performances at youth and senior levels attracted interest from several Premier League clubs before Chelsea finalised the deal. The move sees Alao continue his football development within a Premier League setup following his time at Sheffield Wednesday.

The agreement marks the next step in Alao’s career as he prepares to begin a new chapter at Stamford Bridge. T

he Nigeria-eligible left-back will now link up with Chelsea under the terms of his contract, which runs until 2028.
