Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Kola Ige has urged Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to hand Adebayo Adeleye a starting role in Nigeria’s international friendly against Jordan, following the injury setback suffered by first-choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.
Okoye, who started in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran in Antalya, has been ruled out of Tuesday’s encounter after sustaining a thigh knock during training on Monday, leaving Chelle with a decision to make between his available goalkeeping options.
Ige backed Adeleye to step in, citing the goalkeeper’s impressive club form and the need to assess his capabilities at international level.
"Of course, he (Adeleye) is doing very well in his club. We have seen Uzoho, we should see what Adeleye can do," he said to allnigeriasoccer.com.
While acknowledging Okoye’s quality, the former Flying Eagles shot-stopper stressed that consistency and form remain key determinants in the goalkeeping position.
"Okoye is a good goalkeeper. But goalkeeper department has to do with form or luck. He is a very good goalkeeper. On a good day, he can win a game. You can see his performance at Udinese."
Ige also weighed in on the situation of Stanley Nwabali, who has been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Chippa United after the Africa Cup of Nations.
Expressing concern, Ige questioned the timing of the decision, noting that players at that level typically secure a new deal before ending an existing contract.
"I don't understand the situation with him because at that level before you terminate a contract another contract should be available," he added.
"He has to be playing for a club otherwise he would lose his shape and be out of form."
With Maduka Okoye sidelined for the clash against Jordan, Adeleye will be eager for an opportunity to start, as he aims to prove his quality and stake a claim for a regular place in the team.
