Frustrated Werder Bremen fans whistle as Boniface struggles in 1-1 draw with Cologne

Victor Boniface came under scrutiny following his performance in Werder Bremen’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw against FC Cologne on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker was introduced in the 70th minute as a substitute for Keke Topp.

Fans at the Weser Stadium voiced their frustration, with isolated whistles audible as Boniface appeared less engaged during the closing stages of the match.

On multiple occasions, he handled situations from a standing start, resulting in the loss of possession.

Werder Bremen coach Horst Steffen addressed questions regarding Boniface’s showing, keeping his comments brief.

“We don’t have to constantly evaluate individual players now,” Steffen said, as quoted by Deichstube, adding, “Maybe a goal will help him to become even stronger,” before concluding the discussion.

Boniface, currently on loan at Werder Bremen, spoke to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger about the public criticism and his recurring injury issues.

“In football, it’s like this: If you play well one season, score goals, everyone expects you to do it the same way the next season. Otherwise people just start talking. From my time in Norway until now I have had a lot of pain, but I have made it this far. I’m really happy that I managed to play football for such top clubs at all, so I don’t know fear anymore. I have to live with it,” he said.

Werder Bremen took the lead in the 22nd minute through Marco Friedl, but Cologne equalized in stoppage time via Said El Mala.

Boniface’s recent struggles on the field have impacted his international prospects, affecting his recall to the Super Eagles squad in previous matches.

He may also miss out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled to start in December, as he continues to work through form and fitness challenges.
