Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has suggested that some fringe players, including Raphael Onyedika, could be considered for action in Nigeria’s final Group C match against Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), though he stopped short of confirming any squad rotation.
Onyedika, a key figure for Belgian side Club Brugge, is yet to make an appearance at the tournament despite featuring in Nigeria’s pre-AFCON friendly against Egypt in Cairo.
His lack of minutes has raised questions among fans, especially with Nigeria already through to the knockout stage.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Chelle acknowledged that Onyedika and other squad members deserve playing time but maintained that selection decisions remain solely his responsibility.
“For the rotation, once again I keep it for me. Lots of players like Raphael {Onyedika}, they deserve to play for this team, but I make every time a choice I can tell you they deserve to play,” he said.
Nigeria sealed qualification to the knockout rounds following a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.
The result sparked speculation that Chelle might rotate his squad for the final group fixture against Uganda’s Cranes.
However, the Malian tactician played down the speculation, insisting that a final decision would only be taken after the team’s last training session.
“We will have a last training session once again and after the training session I will make a decision,” he added.
Despite already booking a place in the knockout phase, the Super Eagles still have plenty to play for, as avoiding defeat against Uganda would secure top spot in Group C and potentially a more favourable draw in the next round.
