Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed the instructions he received from Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Rob Edwards before coming on to inspire his side’s comeback in a 2–2 draw against Brentford.
The Nigerian striker started the match on the bench but was introduced in the 75th minute, replacing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde as Wolves pushed for a way back into the contest.
His impact was almost immediate, as Arokodare found the back of the net just three minutes after coming on to complete a remarkable comeback for the visitors.
Arokodare stooped low at the far post to meet a well-delivered cross from João Gomes, directing his header beyond Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher to level the score.
Speaking after the match, Arokodare disclosed that Edwards urged him to make his physical presence count in the box as Wolves continued to create opportunities from crosses.
"He said I should go and try and score because we are getting a lot of chances and crosses and we needed a presence," Arokodare told Sky Sports.
"My job was to come help him and I am glad I was able to score."
Wolverhampton Wanderers nearly completed the turnaround moments after the equaliser, with Arokodare coming close to grabbing a dramatic winner.
The Nigerian forward rose highest inside the six-yard box but saw his powerful header crash against the crossbar.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, the Nigerian forward admitted he was unlucky not to find the net again but remained satisfied with the point after his side fought back from two goals down.
"It was a very good cross from {Jackson} Tchatchoua but I was quite unlucky because I hit the post. He was also unlucky in the second because he hit the post."
"It would have been great if those two chances went in but we will take the point because we started the game not as we wanted it, with two goals down, but we ended it well," he added.
Brentford had earlier raced into a comfortable two-goal lead in the first half through strikes from Michael Kayode and Igor Thiago.
However, Wolves began their comeback before the break when Adam Armstrong pulled one back to reduce the deficit.
Arokodare completed the comeback with his third Premier League goal since completing his summer move from Genk to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
