Hellas Verona has issued a strongly worded official
statement condemning the actions of striker Gift Orban following his
involvement in a physical altercation with a fan in the parking area
adjacent to the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.
The
incident occurred on Sunday, shortly after the club’s 1-0 defeat to AC
Milan in Serie A.
Adrien Rabiot’s first-half strike extended Hellas
Verona’s dismal run to eight losses in nine league matches, leaving them
rooted to 19th place and ten points adrift of safety with five games
remaining.
According to
reports, the confrontation began when Orban refused a fan’s request for a
photograph as he attempted to leave the stadium in his car.
The
supporter allegedly slapped the vehicle in frustration, prompting the
23-year-old Nigerian forward to step out and engage in a physical
exchange.
A Hellas Verona staff member quickly intervened to separate
the pair and return Orban to his vehicle.
Footage of the clash, which
was widely shared on social media, sparked immediate backlash.
In response, Hellas Verona released the following official statement:
"With
reference to the incidents that took place after the Hellas Verona v
Milan match in the parking area adjacent to the Bentegodi Stadium,
involving player Gift Orban and a group of supporters, firmly
dissociates itself from and condemns any form of violent conduct.
"The
club will continue to gather and assess relevant information."
The
statement emphasizes the club’s clear rejection of any violent
behaviour and signals that an internal investigation is ongoing.
Orban,
on loan from German club Hoffenheim with an option to buy, has been
Hellas Verona’s leading goalscorer this season with seven goals in 28 Serie A appearances.
Despite his on-field contribution, this latest
off-field indiscretion coming amid the team’s impending relegation to
Serie B could seriously harm his prospects of remaining at the club.
Hellas
Verona will now focus on their next fixture against Lecce on April 25
as they battle to secure just their fourth league win of a challenging
campaign.
Further updates regarding Orban’s situation are anticipated
once the club completes its assessment.
