Former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou has expressed strong support for Ademola Lookman, insisting that the forward has the backing of football fans across the continent as he continues his UEFA Champions League campaign with Atletico Madrid.
Kalou made the remarks following Lookman's subdued performance in Atletico Madrid's 2-0 win over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Lookman, who joined the Spanish club from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, was substituted in the second half for Alexander Sørloth, who later netted the second goal from close range.
The hosts had earlier taken the lead late in the first half through Julián Álvarez, who curled a superb free-kick beyond Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García.
Speaking on SuperSport, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Kalou attributed Lookman's performance to the tactical demands of the encounter, explaining that the Nigerian was required to take on more defensive responsibilities, which limited his usual attacking impact.
"In this kind of game, I am sure he didn't enjoy the match because he had to defend more than he had to attack," he said.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Kalou emphasized the importance of the result, adding that Lookman would take satisfaction from his team's advantage as they push for a place in the semi-finals.
"His strength is to go forward but still when you have the victory you are happy to go back home, knowing that you have the chance to qualify for the semis," he added.
Kalou also expressed confidence in the Super Eagles forward, stating that his quality remains undeniable and that African fans will continue to support him in his quest for European success.
"I hope he will get there because he is a great player and all Africans will be rooting for him," the Ivorian forward concluded.
Lookman has been in fine form, registering two goals and four assists in twelve appearances in the Champions League this term.
The Super Eagles winger will be eager to sustain his impressive run heading into the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
