Former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie has expressed strong admiration for Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho, despite the striker enduring an injury-hit spell that has disrupted his consistency at Celtic Park.
Iheanacho, who joined the Scottish champions on a free transfer last September, made an encouraging start to life in Scotland, scoring twice in his opening three league appearances against Kilmarnock and Motherwell.
His early impact quickly raised expectations among supporters, who anticipated a strong campaign from the former Leicester City forward.
However, the Nigerian international’s momentum was halted by recurring fitness concerns, which limited his ability to maintain form and secure regular minutes.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, McAvennie praised Iheanacho’s natural ability when fully fit, insisting the striker remains a top-class finisher.
“I like Kelechi Iheanacho because when he’s up to speed and up to fitness, he’s top. He’s a proper, proper striker,” McAvennie said. “Who’s going to be the Player of the Year? Yang probably. Or Nygren because he’s scoring.”
Despite his struggles, Iheanacho has recently returned to action and marked his comeback with a goal in Celtic’s 2–1 victory over Dundee at Dens Park.
With only a few matches remaining in the campaign, the 29-year-old will be aiming to stay fit, regain full sharpness, and play a decisive role as Celtic push to defend their Scottish Premiership title.
