Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Alex Iwobi has explained his decision to represent the Super Eagles rather than England, citing his Nigerian roots and a strong sense of cultural belonging.
Despite growing up in London and progressing through the England youth system, the Fulham midfielder said he felt more at home with Nigeria, a feeling that ultimately influenced his decision to switch his international allegiance.
Alex Iwobi was first called up to the Nigeria squad for an African Games qualifier against Gabon in February 2015 but was unable to make his debut due to uncertainty over his eligibility, having previously represented England at youth level.
Later that year, he made his senior debut in an international friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the age of nineteen.
With 91 caps to his name, it is widely expected that Iwobi will surpass Ahmed Musa to become Nigeria's most capped player in history.
"Quick disclaimer: I was born in Nigeria. I was eight months old when I moved over here. Obviously, I grew up in London.
"I've grown up in the English culture, but at home it was always the Nigerian culture β the Nigerian food," Iwobi told CAF TV's Diaspora Talks.
"I played in the England system from 16 to 19, but I thought it was only right that, before I ever made a decision, I tried out both.
"When I went to try Nigeria, I felt more at home, like the Nigerian spirit has always been within me."
Iwobi has insisted that he has no regrets about choosing Nigeria over England at senior level.
" Of course, I respect England, but it's nice that I have gone back to the Nigerian team, and there are a lot of players doing so now, not just in Nigeria, but other countries as well. Everyone is remembering their roots.
"They are celebrating and going back to represent, so itβs nice."
Iwobi has been named in Nigeria's squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and he's expected to report for international duty in Cairo after Fulham's Premier League meeting with Burnley.
