'I'm quite versatile' - Dele-Bashiru ready to contribute wherever needed for Super Eagles

Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has opened up on his versatility and approach ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 fixture against Tunisia.

The Super Eagles are set to take on the Carthage Eagles on Saturday, following their 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the tournament opener.

Speaking ahead of the game, Dele-Bashiru reflected on the motivation that comes with participating in the AFCON.

“I think just being in the Afcon by itself is enough motivation for us to go and try and get the victory tomorrow. Of course, it's an important match for us if you want to finish top of the group, so we'll do everything we can to get the job done,” he said.

The midfielder acknowledged the significance of the upcoming clash, noting that each game in the group stage carries weight in determining which teams advance to the knockout rounds.

Dele-Bashiru, who made his tournament debut against Tanzania, also highlighted his flexibility on the field.

“I think in my career I've played in a lot of different positions, so I'm quite versatile when it comes to that aspect of the game. So wherever the coach asks me to play, that's where I'll play and I'll try and do as well as I can to help the team get the victory,” he explained.

His experience in multiple roles is expected to provide the team with options and adaptability, particularly against a strong Tunisian side that began the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Uganda.

Dele-Bashiru further emphasized the importance of preparation and maintaining focus ahead of every match, highlighting that success in the tournament depends not only on talent but also on discipline and consistency.

Speaking about the team’s approach to training and match readiness, Dele-Bashiru stressed the need for a structured mindset.

“I've said before that it's important that we take each game the same way with the same focus, with the same respect for the opposition, and train hard, follow what the coach wants from us, which will help us prepare for the matches,” Dele-Bashiru added.

Nigeria began their campaign in the ongoing AFCON 2025 with a 2-1 win over Tanzania, a result that has set the tone for their group-stage ambitions.

The upcoming clash against Tunisia represents a crucial step in their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
