Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he declined the captain's armband from German midfielder İlkay Gündoğan during Galatasaray's victory over Alanyaspor.
The Super Eagles forward found the net and also set up a goal as the Yellow-Reds bounced back to winning form at Rams Park on Saturday.
In an interview after the match, Osimhen explained that it felt strange to take the armband from the former Manchester City star.
The Nigerian forward described the experienced midfielder as someone he deeply respects, noting that Gündoğan is calm, motivating and widely respected across the football world.
"İlkay is someone I respect very much, he is very valuable to me. He is a person known worldwide," Osimhen was quoted as saying by Galatasaray's official website.
"He is both calm and motivating. He is someone we can always talk to. He is very visionary. When he brought me the captain's armband, it felt strange."
Osimhen explained that he handed the armband back to Gündoğan so he could guide the team.
"I gave it back so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He is someone who deserves love," he added.
Osimhen has been in outstanding form since making his move permanent, registering 17 goals and six assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.
Osimhen will be hoping to maintain his impressive run as Galatasaray push to successfully defend the Turkish Super Lig title at the end of the season.
