Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has criticised the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to shift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from a biennial to a four-year cycle, describing the development as a “shame” for African football lovers.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the Atalanta star said the change denies Africans the excitement and cultural significance of a tournament they have long enjoyed every two years.
“The decision is being made, we can't really change it,” Lookman said. “I mean it is a shame for Africans not being able to get the tournament every two years like we have been used to, it is a disappointment.”
Lookman also reflected on Nigeria’s strong start to the ongoing AFCON in Morocco, where the Super Eagles sealed three wins from three matches in the group stage.
“It's been good three wins from three games, nine points, it is positive for us,” the 28-year-old said to Ademola Victor TV. “We are going in the right direction and we want to continue this way.”
With Nigeria already through to the Round of 16, Lookman said the team is not afraid of any opponent, including the possibility of facing Ivory Coast, Cameroon, or Mozambique.
“No team we want to avoid. I have respect for everybody. If you want to win a tournament you need to play the best,” he added. “We want to continue to win the games, face everybody in this competition because to win a tournament you have to play the best, so we are looking forward to the teams to come ahead. “
Lookman has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in Morocco, delivering two goals and two assists in the group phase.
The former Everton forward is determined to carry his form into the knockout stages as the Super Eagles push for a fourth AFCON title, a feat that would help compensate for their absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
