Though he was not nominated for the club's official Man of the Match award, Alex Iwobi delivered one of his best performances in an Everton shirt as they registered a comprehensive 3-0 win over Leeds United in a Premier League tie at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.
The Hale End Academy product has been at the receiving end of criticism for his recent performances for club and country, but won over the fans after a fine display against Leeds United.
Iwobi was at the heart of everything so good from an Everton point of view over the course of ninety minutes.
Iwobi took up some lovely positions and came close to scoring in
the 37th minute but his swerving effort went inches past the post and his shot looked destined for the net but Koch made a block in the 74th minute.
Toffees boss Frank Lampard admitted post-match that the Super Eagles star may have forced his way into the starting lineup with his performance and revealed that he told the winger to believe in his abilities before the visit of Leeds United.
"He's a quiet lad, keeps his head down, trains with talent, trains
with work ethic, and the way we changed the formation of the team and
played with wide-men as we did, Alex has just sort of demanded a place
in the team with his performance," Lampard was quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.
"He just needs to believe in
himself and I said it to him before the game. I certainly believe in him
from the things I've seen but the work ethic side of his game he showed
in that role".
Iwobi played under three minutes in Lampards's first game in charge of Everton and was a non-playing substitute versus Newcastle United before he was handed a surprise start against Leeds United.
