'Let them go to Nigeria' - Gaye urges Ghana FA not to appoint European coach for 2026 World Cup

Respected African football pundit Mamadou Gaye has urged the Ghana Football Association to avoid appointing a European coach for the 2026 World Cup and instead consider experienced African coaches.

Sixty-two days before the start of the World Cup, Ghana are still without a coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a poor run of results, with a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany on March 30 proving to be the final straw.

European coaches, including Hervé Renard, Felix Sanchez Bas, Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos have been linked with the vacant Black Stars job.

Gaye warned Ghana against the appointment of a foreign coach, arguing that such a decision would benefit European managers more than African football.

Speaking on SuperSport's Soccer Africa on Thursday, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Gaye stated: "The biggest mistake Ghana can make, and what nobody will forgive them for, is bringing a European coach to the World Cup, polishing his CV, and leaving Africa, and after the World Cup he’ll disappear".

He specifically pointed to Nigeria as an example of a country with qualified coaches that Ghana could consider if they are unable to appoint a local manager.

"If they don’t have a Ghanaian who can do the job, let them go to Nigeria, let them go to South Africa, let them go to Ivory Coast. The qualified coaches are there. There are many qualified African coaches with experience."

Ghana have been placed in Group L of the 2026 World Cup with England, Panama, and Croatia, and will open their campaign on June 17 against Panama.
