Life after Troost-Ekong: Super Eagles face leadership test at Afcon 2025

As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations prepares to kick off in Morocco on Sunday, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are navigating a major transition following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong.

The former captain stepped away from the national team just weeks before the tournament, ending a distinguished career and leaving Nigeria to adapt without one of its most experienced leaders.

Troost-Ekong’s retirement marked the close of a significant era. The central defender earned 83 caps for Nigeria and was a central figure in the team’s recent resurgence on the continental stage.

At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he captained the Super Eagles to the final, scoring crucial goals during the tournament, including in the final against hosts Ivory Coast. His performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

Beyond statistics and silverware, Troost-Ekong was widely regarded as a unifying presence within the squad.

His leadership extended beyond matchdays, often acting as a bridge between players, coaches, and the wider football public.

His sudden absence has therefore created both a tactical and emotional challenge for the team as Afcon 2025 unfolds.

Ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed as the new captain.

The Beşiktaş midfielder brings considerable experience, with over 70 international appearances, and has long been viewed as a key figure in the dressing room. Ndidi is known for his calm demeanor, tactical discipline, and consistency—qualities the coaching staff believe can provide stability during this period of transition.

Speaking after his appointment, Ndidi highlighted unity and collective responsibility as central themes for the squad.

His approach represents a shift from Troost-Ekong’s more vocal, commanding leadership style to one based on example and teamwork.

The Super Eagles will also rely on other senior players to share leadership duties.

Forwards Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon, along with midfielder Alex Iwobi, are expected to play influential roles both on and off the pitch as Nigeria pursues continental success.

As the tournament progresses, Nigeria’s prospects at AFCON 2025 will depend on how effectively this new leadership structure functions.

While Troost-Ekong’s legacy remains significant, the Super Eagles are now focused on forging a new identity under Ndidi’s captaincy, with the aim of maintaining competitiveness and cohesion on Africa’s biggest football stage.
