Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has named England U21 star of Nigerian parentage, Dominic Solanke, among the three players that can act as backup to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané if the two African stars are not available for selection.
In his maiden season at Anfield, Solanke got games, 27 in total, but has dropped down the pecking order in the new season, with Daniel Sturridge returning to full fitness and Xherdan Shaqiri joining the club from demoted Stoke City.
''Firmino is an absolute genius when you watch him close up,'' Gerrard told BBC Radio 5 Live.
''He’s as interested in setting up a goal as scoring one. The key is Firmino.
''They’ve got decent back-up – if they were to lose Salah or Mane, Daniel Sturridge seems to be in good shape and scoring goals and then they’ve got Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke.''
Jurgen Klopp's side have played eight games in all competitions this
term and Solanke has yet to taste action though he made the bench for
their recent game against Chelsea in the League Cup.
