Nigerian attacking midfielder cum winger Shola Shoretire is in line to set a new UEFA Youth League record on Wednesday after he was added to Manchester United's roster ahead of today's clash against Valencia.
Aged 14 years,10 months, 10 days, Shoretire will overtake former Andelecht goalkeeper Mile Svilar as the youngest player ever in the competition if he features.
Although Ola Aina holds the record of being the youngest Nigeria international to feature in the UEFA Youth League, aged 17 years 1 month, 18 days when he faced Basel in November 2013, followed by Arsenal's Alex Iwobi who was 17 years 4 months, 15 days when he helped Arsenal beat Marseille 4-1 on September 8, 2013, they are nowhere near the top five players of Nigerian descent to debut in the competition.
The absolute Nigerian record belongs to Ajax Amsterdam striker Dillon Hoogewerf who was aged 15 years and 9 months when he came off the
bench for the Dutch club in their 8-1 rout of AEK Athens last month.
Three Chelsea products in the shape of Faustino Anjorin, Ike Ugbo and Dominic Solanke are in the top five as well as Red Bull Salzburg striker Chikwubuike Adamu.
