Nigeria 0-0 Morocco (2-4 pens): Five observations from Super Eagles' heartbreaking shootout loss to Atlas Lions

The Super Eagles missed the chance to reach the final of the AFCON tournament after falling to hosts Morocco in the semifinals.

Nigeria were edged out 4–2 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time, as the Atlas Lions advanced to the final.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the match

Bruno Onyeamachi pockets Diaz

Olympiakos defender Bruno Onyeamachi delivered a standout performance for the Super Eagles, effectively neutralizing Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz.

Coming into the semifinal, Diaz was Morocco’s biggest attacking threat, having scored in every match of the tournament.

However, Onyeamachi’s disciplined positioning and timely tackles kept the winger quiet throughout the encounter.

Calvin Bassey suspended for third place clash

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey will miss Nigeria’s third-place playoff against Egypt at the ongoing AFCON tournament due to suspension.

Bassey picked up his second yellow card of the competition during the first half of the semifinal defeat to Morocco, after a challenge on dangerman Brahim Diaz at the edge of the box.

His absence is expected to be a significant blow for the Super Eagles as they prepare to face the Pharaohs in the third-place match.

Onyedika careless in possession

Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika was drafted into midfield as a replacement for suspended captain Wilfred Ndidi, who is out due to accumulated yellow cards.

His inclusion followed growing calls from fans for him to feature more prominently.

However, Onyedika struggled to impose himself, losing possession carelessly in midfield and allowing Morocco to launch several dangerous counter-attacks.

Arsène Wenger in the stands as Iwobi features

Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger was among the dignitaries present at the semifinal between Nigeria and Morocco.

Wenger, who handed Alex Iwobi his senior Arsenal debut, watched on as the Fulham midfielder featured for the Super Eagles.

Iwobi made his first appearance for the Gunners in a League Cup clash against Sheffield Wednesday on October 27, 2015, and went on to record 149 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 23 assists across all competitions.

Massive crowd backs Morocco

The Atlas Lions enjoyed overwhelming support from fans at the packed stadium in Rabat.

A sea of home supporters rallied behind the hosts, spurring them on and making it difficult for the Super Eagles to perform at their best.

The vociferous backing also proved crucial during the penalty shootout, helping Morocco overcome Nigeria and secure a place in the final.
