Manager Gernot Rohr made a couple of changes to the team that beat Seychelles last time out, handing Daniel Akpeyi a start in between the sticks while John Ogu, Paul Onuachu and Leon Balogun all came into the side.
The Super Eagles needed less than a minute to hit the ground running from the blast of the whistle and were ahead after lanky striker Onuachu took a good first touch from a lofted ball from John Ogu, left Mahmoud Trezeguet for dead before rifling home a screamer from the edge of the box.
A much improved Alex Iwobi had a chance to add to the scoreline in the first period but was forced into a weak shot which goalkeeper Mahmoud Genesh did well to hold onto.
One of the eye-popping moments of the second half came when Ikechukwu Ezenwa who replaced Daniel Akpeyi pulled off a jaw-dropping save from a long range strike from Amr Wada before following up to deny Islam Gaber as Nigeria held on for a victory sure to massage their ego.
Starting XI: Daniel Akpeyi, Abdullahi Shehu, Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Jamilu Collins, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Henry Onyekuru
