Awoniyi named in BBC PL TOTW after powerful performance against Chelsea

BBC football pundit Troy Deeney has selected his Premier League Team of the Week following the conclusion of matchday 35, with Taiwo Awoniyi earning a place after his standout performance for Nottingham Forest in their 3-1 win at Chelsea on Monday.

Making a rare start for the Reds, Awoniyi scored a brace and won a penalty as Forest extended their unbeaten run to eleven matches across all competitions.

The Nigeria international gave Forest a blistering start, putting them ahead just 98 seconds into the contest before Igor Jesus converted from the spot in the 15th minute after Awoniyi was brought down by Malo Gusto inside the box.

Seven minutes into the second half, Awoniyi struck again, tapping in a Morgan Gibbs-White cross to extend Forest's lead.

Tottenham Hotspur lead the way with three inclusions in the Team of the Week, followed by Nottingham Forest with two, while Everton, Manchester United, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal each have one representative.

Explaining his decision to include Awoniyi in the Team of the Week, Deeney said: "A big performance from him. Only his second start of the season for Forest.

"I saw him earlier in the season against Chelsea and he looked like he was carrying a wagon, like he couldn't play football any more, but playing this Chelsea team, how the roles have reversed. He looked fantastic - two goals, powerful performance."

Awoniyi has now made 100 appearances for Forest, comprising 87 in the Premier League, 8 in the FA Cup and 5 in the Carabao Cup.
