The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their campaign for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-earned 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday evening in Morocco, building momentum as runners-up from the last edition of the tournament.
Nigeria started the contest with confidence, controlling possession and pinning Tanzania back for long spells.
Their early pressure was rewarded in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi powered home a header from close range to give the Super Eagles the lead. The goal marked Ajayi’s second international strike for Nigeria.
Tanzania emerged with renewed intent after the break and were rewarded for their persistence in the 50th minute.
Charles M’Mombwa found space inside the penalty area and fired a first-time shot beyond the reach of the Nigerian goalkeeper to bring the game level at 1–1, briefly shifting the momentum in Tanzania’s favour.
Nigeria responded quickly and nearly regained the lead when Victor Osimhen found the net in the 47th minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee review.
Undeterred, the Super Eagles continued to press and restored their advantage in the 52nd minute through a moment of pure quality from Ademola Lookman.
The forward danced past his markers at the edge of the box before unleashing a breathtaking strike that left the Tanzanian goalkeeper with no chance.
With three points secured, the Super Eagles have made a solid start to their group campaign.
Attention now turns to their next group phase fixture against Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, as Nigeria continue their pursuit of continental success.
