Nottingham Forest coach provides fitness update on Ola Aina as Awoniyi suffers injury pre-Liverpool

Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche faced the media on Thursday, two days before his side's Premier League trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, and provided a fitness update on his squad.

It was already confirmed that Nigeria international Ola Aina would miss the journey to Merseyside, but Dyche revealed that fellow countryman Taiwo Awoniyi has now joined the fullback in the treatment room after picking up an injury.

Aina has been sidelined for the past seventeen games for both club and country, having suffered a hamstring injury requiring surgery during Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Awoniyi, who struggled for game time after a failed summer transfer move and was absent from Forest's first seven Premier League fixtures, is now back in favour at Forest, making three consecutive appearances under Dyche.

Providing an update on several players, including Aina, Dyche told reporters: "Callum Hudson-Odoi is making good progress, he's been on the grass this week so he's certainly in consideration to make the squad, so that's better news.

"Chris Wood is getting rescanned but it's good news so far. It's just part of the process, there is nothing untoward about that.

"Douglas Luiz is making progress but he's going to be a matter of time, it's not instant. Dilane Bakwa making progress but not training, he's on the grass but not with us.

"Ola Aina is very similar and Oleksandr Zinchenko is making progress with the sports science team and physios. Not with us."

Awoniyi impressed off the bench in Forest's last outing before the international break, a 3-1 win over Leeds United.

"Taiwo was terrific when he came on. Unfortunately, we've lost him with a bit of an injury so we will see how that settles down," Dyche added.

Awoniyi has not featured for the Super Eagles since November 2024 when he played the final sixteen minutes of a 1-0 victory over Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
