Obi Mikel Reacts To Claims He Has Been Offered A Coaching Role At Chelsea

Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has dismissed reports in the local media that he has been offered a coaching position at Chelsea.

Mikel had an illustrious ten-and-a-half-year career at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield, before joining Tianjin Teda in January 2017.

It had been erroneously suggested that the Trabzonspor midfielder had been offered the chance to return to Stamford Bridge by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to work as an assistant to Frank Lampard.

"To be honest, I have no idea where this story came from," Mikel told  told Sabah (via SportWitness).

"I was surprised when I saw the news because neither me nor my club had a meeting with Chelsea about becoming a coach. Chelsea is, of course, my home, but the reports aren’t true."

In 372 appearances for Chelsea, Mikel scored six goals and set up thirteen others.

The 32-year-old has also worn the colours of Plateau United, Middlesbrough and Lyn Oslo.
