Osimhen sets new Nigerian record in Italy; equals feat of Weah, Eto'o and Mohamed Salah
Victor Osimhen notched a brace as Napoli came from behind to register a 2-1 win over Udinese in a Serie A match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples on Sunday afternoon.
And in doing so, the Napoli number 9 set a new record in the Italian top-flight after becoming the first Nigerian player in history to reach double figures of goals in two different seasons.
Osimhen ended the 2020-2021 campaign with ten goals in the Serie A and already has eleven goals this term with his brace against Udinese.
Football statisticians OPTA have tweeted that in general Osimhen is the fourth African player to reach double figures of goals in two different seasons, following in the footsteps of legendary AC Milan striker George Weah, former Inter Milan center forward Samuel Eto'o and ex-AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah.
After Gerard Deulofeu had given Udinese a first half lead, Napoli got the equaliser with a header from Osimhen in the 52nd minute and the Super Eagle ensured the Blues claimed a win when he netted the match-winner at minute 63.
Osimhen thought he had scored his first hat-trick in Italian football in the 70th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The 2015 U17 World Cup winner has finished with at least ten goals in the league in four consecutive seasons.
