Former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro was present as Nigeria suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the DR Congo Leopards in the decisive World Cup qualifying playoff.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo secured victory through a 4-3 penalty shootout, ending Nigeria’s bid to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Peseiro, who led Nigeria to the final of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations where the Super Eagles were beaten 2-1 by hosts Ivory Coast, watched the encounter from the stands (as pictured).
His appearance marked a notable moment, coming months after his exit from the role following the AFCON campaign.
During his tenure, Nigeria advanced to the tournament’s final for the first time since 2013, recording strong performances before narrowly missing out on the title.
The defeat to the Leopards brought Nigeria’s qualification journey to an abrupt close.
The Super Eagles had taken an early lead before DR Congo drew level, and the match proceeded through a tense extra-time period without further goals. In the penalty shootout, DR Congo converted the decisive kick to claim the victory.
The result confirmed Nigeria’s absence from the upcoming World Cup and concluded a dramatic and challenging qualifying series for the Super Eagles.
