Golden Eaglets Retain Fifa Under 17 World Cup
Published: November 09, 2015The Golden Eaglets have retained the Fifa Under 17 World Cup after two goals in quick succession in the second half gave them a 2 - 0 victory over Mali at the Estadio Sausalito (Viña del Mar) on Monday morning.
The game began in spectacular fashion, with Osinachi Ebere missing a spot kick in the third minute before hitting the crossbar on the rebound.
Skipper Kelechi Nwakali saw his effort go narrowly wide while Traore’s s header was saved by Akpan.
On 37 minutes, Funsho Bamgboye’s effort was heading in after being set up by Chukwueze but it was finally deflected for a corner kick.
It was scoreless at the end of the first half though Mali were slightly the better team.
At the start of the second half, Nigeria took control of the game and they were rewarded with the opening goal in the 56th minute. Top scorer Victor Osimhen fired home a close range effort after he was set up by substitute Chinedu Madueke.
Three minutes later, Funsho Bamgboye made it 2 - 0; finding the roof of the net with his left foot after a poor throw out by the Malian goalkeeper.
The Emmanuel Amueke - led side held on to their two - goal lead through the end of the game.
Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimhen were awarded the Golden Ball and Golden Boot, as the best player and the top goalscorer at the 2015 Fifa Under 17 World Cup respectively.
