Agbonlahor Steps Down As Aston Villa Skipper; Apologizes To Fans
Published: April 29, 2016
Former England international Gabby Agbonlahor has stepped down as captain of Aston Villa in the wake of his behavior after the club were relegated from the English Premier League.
The striker was suspended from training and taking part in official games by Villa after he was pictured inhaling laughing gas on Saturday, April 16 when The Claret and Blue Army lost to Manchester United, their last chance to remain in the top-flight.
“This role was a huge honour to me and it hurts to have lost it. My celebrations and passion, especially in games against local rivals, shows my loyalty to Aston Villa,” said Agbonlahor on Instagram.
“I am asking Aston Villa fans for forgiveness as I’m hurting as well despite reports and photos in the press making out otherwise.
“I agree my performances this season have not been good enough but I will be working hard to make things right! Up The Villa, Villa Till I Die!”
The Birmingham - born Agbonlahor has spent the whole of his professional career at Aston Villa though he had brief loan spells at Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.
