Nigerian Striker Nets Brace For Southampton U18 In Win Vs Leicester City
Published: January 27, 2018Southampton won for the sixth time on the spin in the U18 Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Leicester City at The Leicester City Training Ground, with Nigerian striker Jonathan Afolabi notching a brace.
Afolabi, a Republic of Ireland U19 international, started the game for the Saints; promising left-back Calvin Ughelumba and ex-Man City defender Edward Elewa-Ikpakwu made the Foxes starting XI.
Shade put the Foxes in front in the 25th minute but Afolabi capitalized on a goalkeeping error before rolling the ball into an empty net to level things up ten minutes later.
Enzo Robise's close range effort gave Southampton a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute before Afolabi made sure the points were safe with his second goal of the afternoon in the first minute of stoppage time.
Aged 18, Afolabi represented Shamrock Rovers and St Joseph's Boys in Ireland before penning a scholarship deal with Southampton in 2016.
He has netted 7 goals in the league for Southampton's youth teams this season.
