Ex-Liverpool Star Rated Ahead Of Semi Ajayi At Rotherham Last Season Commits Future To Nigeria
Published: November 07, 2018
Former Liverpool wonderkid Michael Ihiekwe has committed his international future to Nigeria ahead of the country where he was born and raised, England, allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report.
The central defender was one of the unsung heroes as Rotherham United sealed promotion to the EFL Championship via the playoffs at the end of the 2017-2018 season.
It is being suggested that Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr may have gotten the wrong man at Rotherham United as Ihiekwe was ahead of Ajayi in the pecking order of central defenders at the club last season.
Rotherham's manager Paul Warne picked Ihiekwe ahead of Ajayi in central defense in seven of their last eight matches of the season and he only missed the playoff final vs Shrewsbury Town after suffering an injury in the semifinal.
The 25-year-old Ihiekwe has been described as a defender with robust physical presence, pacy, dominant in the air and descent on the ball.
Born in Liverpool, Ihiekwe lists Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town and Tranmere Rovers amongst his former clubs and is spending the first half of this season on loan at Accrington Stanley.
