Villarreal sweat over fitness of Chukwueze ahead of Europa League showpiece against Man Utd
Published: May 07, 2021Spanish club Villarreal are sweating over the fitness of one of their key players, Samuel Chukwueze less than three weeks before they face Manchester United in the Europa League final.
It's a no-brainer that the Nigeria international would be involved in the showpiece at the Stadion Energa Gdańsk in Poland if he recovers from his injury.
Chukwueze covered his face and was seemingly in tears as he was stretchered off the pitch in the first half of Thursday night's Europa League semifinal clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium after suffering a suspected abdonimal injury.
He pulled up with no one around him and indicated that he had a problem with less than half an hour played.
Manager Unai Emery did not provide an update on Chuwkueze's injury during his post-match press conference.
The right winger has been overused by the Spanish football tactician in the last three weeks, starting seven consecutive games in all competitions including three in the Europa League.
The Diamond Academy product made a good start to the game against Arsenal and came close to breaking the deadlock in the fifth minute; goalkeeper Leno was required to make an early save, pushing his shot over the crossbar.
Villarreal's 2-1 win last week was enough to see them book their place in the Europa League final following their scoreless draw last night.
