'Was the best young midfielder in Denmark' - Ex-Liverpool chief hails Brentford loanee Onyeka
Published: January 18, 2025
Liverpool's former director of research Dr Ian Graham, namechecked Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, who is currently on loan at Augsburg from Brentford, while lauding the Bees on the quality of their players.
As Liverpool face Brentford on Saturday, the former Liverpool chief has been singing the praises of the Bees' signings from recent seasons.
The Nigerian midfielder, has been making waves in the German Bundesliga with his impressive performances.
Graham's praise for Onyeka is not surprising, given the midfielder's skills on the pitch.
However, what is interesting is that Graham's admiration for Onyeka dates back to the midfielder's time at Midtjylland in Denmark.
According to Graham, Onyeka was one of the top young midfielders in Denmark, playing for FC Midtjylland before joining Brentford.
Graham's comments highlight the talent and potential that Onyeka possesses, and it will be interesting to see how his final performance will look like at the end of his current loan spell in the Bundesliga .
"Frank Onyeka was the best young midfielder in Denmark. He played for FC Midtjylland, another club owned by (Matthew) Benham, and soon joined Brentford," Graham revealed in his book, 'How to Win the Premier League: The Inside Story of Football's Data Revolution', via The Liverpool Echo.
Onyeka's current loan spell at Augsburg has seen him make a significant impact on the team. His performances have been pretty decent, and he will be looking to help the club climb higher up the table as they currently sit at 12th position in the current standings.
It's worth noting that Onyeka clocked a speed of 32.57 km/h on his Bundesliga debut against FC St Pauli in September last year, making him the third fastest player after 90 minutes in the league at the time.
While he is yet to score a goal for Augsburg, he has managed two assists for the club this season.
