'The right move' - Talented striker Chido Obi insists he has no regrets dumping Arsenal for Man Utd
Published: April 21, 2025
Nigeria-eligible centre-forward Chido Obi became the 252nd academy player to debut for Manchester United's first team, after making his Premier League bow at Tottenham Hotspur in February 2025.
Since his debut at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Denmark U21 international has totaled five appearances in all competitions for United's first team.
When a player makes their first-team debut, their photo is added to the wall in the Graduate Lounge at Carrington, where the names of all Academy graduates are proudly displayed.
Obi was handed his debut against Tottenham Hotspur on February 16, four days after he lit up the FA Youth Cup with a hat-trick against Chelsea.
"It was a big moment for me and my family. My parents came to the game and my brothers came as well so it was a really good moment for me to come on," Obi told Manchester United's official website.
Obi, Arsenal's record goalscorer in the U18 Premier League, turned down a scholarship deal at the Gunners before agreeing terms with Manchester United last summer.
The striker says he has no second thoughts about rejecting Arsenal in favor of Manchester United, calling it 'the right move.'
"It definitely feels like the right move, just need to keep working hard."
On what he has learned training regularly with first team players over the last three months and getting first team experience, he answered: "To be smart and think quicker because the game is quicker compared to academy football."
Obi shared the advice he received from Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, and credited his parents for shaping his mindset.
"He just told me to be humble, keep working hard everyday and hopefully get more opportunities soon.
"My dad and mom always told me to be a good person and listen to my coaches because they want me to get better."
Obi added that his favorite moment as a Manchester United player was his home debut against Fulham on March 2 when he came close to scoring his first senior goal.
