Ex-CSKA Moscow assistant coach defends transfer fee paid for Super Eagles winger Ejuke
Published: May 09, 2021Former CSKA Moscow assistant coach Viktor Onopko has defended the transfer fee The Army Men paid to SC Heerenveen for the services of Chidera Ejuke last summer amid criticism that the Russian Premier League giants overpaid for the Super Eagles winger.
The Eredivisie side agreed to end their association with Ejuke in exchange for approximately 12 million euros.
The transfer fee is the subject of scrutiny as the Nigeria international has been inconsistent since his move to the Muscovites, scoring four goals in 32 appearances across all competitions.
That said, Ejuke was named Man of the Match for his brilliant performance in CSKA's 3-1 win against Krasnodar on Saturday, a game in which he was among the scorers.
When asked to react to criticism that CSKA Moscow wasted 12 million euros to sign the Nigerian," Onopko said to Sport Express : "Now it's fashionable to criticize CSKA for any reason. I saw great potential in Ejuke from day one. Speed, dribbling - everything is with him.
"And now he still seems to have begun to understand what is expected of him, began to part with the ball more often, to open up more unexpectedly. And he will certainly add more."
Just a year after signing Ejuke from Valerenga for two million euros, SC Heerenveen made a profit of ten million euros when he was sold to CSKA Moscow.
