Super Falcons player ratings vs USWNT: Oluehi brave; Payne, Alozie versatile; Oshoala caged
Published: June 17, 2021Nigeria's Super Falcons ended their participation in the Summer Series tournament in Texas, USA with a 2-0 defeat to the USA women's national team.
Izuchukwu Okosi here rates the performance of the Super Falcons players.
The Starters
Goalkeeper
Tochukwu Oluehi : She had a brave performance in the match, taking several knocks as the USA side desperately searched for goals. Oluehi produced a brilliant save to deny Christen Press in the second half. 7/10.
Glory Ogbona : An average outing by the center back. She found it difficult in dealing with the constant breaks of the Americans down the middle of the defence. However to her credit, she cleared the ball in the 43rd minute when it seemed the Yankees will get another goal. 6/10.
Onome Ebi : The experienced defender was calm in defence all through the duration of the match. The FC Misk of Belarus defender put her body on the line several times. She cleared and tackled at will. 7/10.
Chidinma Okeke : Okeke saw yellow in the 57th minute. A few times she was brilliant with her decisions in the the game but overall struggled with the pace of the Americans. 6/10.
Midfielders and Strikers
Toni Payne : Predominantly a center forward, she showed her versatility by played in the left wing-back position. Payne defended well and was part of the few attacking forays made by the team. Her mobility down the flanks was excellent. 8/10.
Rasheedat Ajibade : The Atletico Madrid star produced a battling display in the match, breaking plays at will and was part of the few attacking forays of the team. 6/10.
Rita Chikwelu : Impressive outing by the creative midfielder whose wealth of experience helped in no small measure to deal with the American onslaughts especially her defence splitting passes. 7/10.
Ijeoma Okoronkwo : Formed telepathic understanding with Rasheedat Ajibade in midfield for the Falcons and won free kicks a few times for the team albeit she was wasteful with the ball on a few occasions. 6/10.
Francesca Ordega : The forward played in attack in Nigeria's 3-5-2 formation in the attack alongside Asisat Oshoala. Ordega a few times was in midfield to help win the balls and surged forward. Replaced in the second half. 6/10.
Asisat Oshoala : The Barcelona striker was caged. She was the target of a few physical challenges by the USA girls. 6.5/10.
Michelle Alozie : Also played out of position as a right wing-back, had a tough time dealing with the USA forwards and was embarrassed by the dribble of USA left-back Crystal Dunn which left her sprawling on the ground. 6/10.
The Substitutes
Akudo Ogbonna : Replaced Ijeoma Okoronkwo just before the hour mark but found out that there was not much she could do to effect changes. 5/10.
Charity Adule : Helped shore up the defence to mitigate the threats of the Americans. 5/10.
Ifeoma Onumonu : Replaced Francesca Ordega and was impressive down the channels. 5.5/10.
Gift Monday : Came on from the bench two minutes to full time. That was too little a time to make an impact. N/A.
