The Daily Mail says the Hornets are running the rule over the England youth international with a view to offering him a contract.
Abdulmalik is currently a free agent after turning down a new deal at Millwall but the Lions would be due compensation should he sign elsewhere.
The 18-year-old has been linked with possible moves to Arsenal and their next pre-season opponents Glasgow Rangers, with the two clubs watching him last season.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth have withdrawn from the race to sign Abdulmalik after training with the League One club for a couple of weeks.
The Anglo-Nigerian was a key member of the Millwall U18s side that claimed the Professional Development League title and reached the quarterfinals of the FA Youth Cup in 2019-2020.
Watford have bolstered their ranks with the signings of Stoke City loanee Oghenekaro Etebo, Emmanuel Dennis and Dapo Mebude this summer, while Isaac Success, William Troost-Ekong, Tom Dele-Bashiru and Joseph Hungbo are currently on the books of the club.
