Everton manager singles out Super Eagles playmaker for praise pre-Burnley
Published: September 13, 2021Alex Iwobi was one of the players singled out for praise by Everton manager Rafa Benitez before his side's Premier League meeting with Burnley at Goodison Park on Monday night.
The Spaniard revealed how the Super Eagles playmaker had to play through the pain barrier during the Toffees' second round Carabao Cup clash against Huddersfield Town on August 24.
Goals from Alex Iwobi and Andros Townsend secured a win for the Blues over Huddersfield Town.
The Arsenal academy product was visibly limping towards the end of the game but had to stay on as Benitez had used up all his substitutes.
Writing in his programme notes for the visit of the Clarets, Benitez stated : "I want to say, also, how much I liked the character and determination of Alex Iwobi when he was hurt against Huddersfield but stayed on the pitch to help his teammates.
"Tom Davies, too, had a problem in his quadriceps but kept working so hard."
Iwobi recovered in time to be involved in Everton's next match against Brighton & Hove on August 28, coming off the bench for the last twenty minutes, before starting against Liberia in a World Cup qualifier six days later.
