Villarreal's Nigeria international in line to make Champions League debut vs Young Boys
Published: October 20, 2021Samuel Chukwueze is in line to make his UEFA Champions League debut when Villarreal trade tackles with Swiss Super League champions Young Boys on Wednesday night.
According to training images published by the official website of the Yellow Submarine, the Nigeria international traveled with the squad to Switzerland on Tuesday and was spotted training with his teammates at the Wankdorf Stadium - venue of the matchday three clash.
So far this season, Chukwueze has played only 12 minutes of football for Villarreal, that coming as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Osasuna last weekend.
The 2015 U17 World Cup winner had spent more than five months on the sidelines due to an injury to the anterior rectus in the semifinal of the Europa League against Arsenal in May.
Prior to his comeback against Los Rojillos, the left-footed right winger missed sixteen consecutive matches for Villarreal, including the Europa League showpiece versus Manchester United and the UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea.
It remains to be seen if Chukwueze will be named in the starting lineup against Young Boys as the game will be played on an artificial surface, which increases the risk of injuries.
He has appeared in 20 matches in European competition - all of them in the Europa League - scoring two goals with five assists provided.
