EFL : Solanke; Rotherham pair; Spurs loanee Etete; Luton, Gillingham, Bolton Nigerian strikers score
Published: October 23, 2021As many as nine Nigeria-eligible players were on target for their respective clubs in English Football League matches that took place on Saturday, October 23.
In the Championship, former Liverpool and Chelsea starlet Dominic Solanke helped Bournemouth equal a 60-year club record following a 3-0 rout of Huddersfield Town, taking their unbeaten run to 14 games, their best-ever start to a season.
Solanke dispatched a penalty he had won to open the scoring in the 10th minute before firing home his second in the 21st minute, assisted by Philip Billing, taking his tally to eleven for the season in all competitions.
Luton Town's Elijah Adebayo is also in fine form, scoring his seventh league goal this term in a 1-0 win against Hull City at Kenilworth Road.
The former Fulham man headed home a delivery from Fred Onyedinma for the game-winning goal in the 17th minute.
In League One, John Akinde opened the scoring as Gillingham threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at University of Bolton Stadium.
Eleven minutes in, Gillingham striker Akinde flicked the ball in at the near post for 1-0 and Bolton's frontman Dapo Afolayan halved the deficit with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out.
Two Nigerian players opened and closed the scoring as Rotherham United registered an impressive 3-0 road win over MK Dons at Stadium mk.
Michael Ihiekwe's superb header was the difference between the two sides at the break and ex-Flying Eagles invitee Freddie Ladapo finished emphatically for 3-0 in the 72nd minute.
Still in the division, Dennis Adeniran thought he had netted the winner for Sheffield Wednesday, only for the Owls to concede with ten minutes remaining in a 1-1 draw vs Lincoln City.
Ten minutes into the second half, the midfielder put the rebound home after ex-Flying Eagles invitee Fisayo Dele-Bashiru saw his effort saved by the goalkeeper.
In League Two, Tottenham Hotspur loanee Kion Etete helped Northampton Town collect three points in a 2-0 road win at Tranmere Rovers.
Etete got them on their way with a first time finish in the 52nd minute, his second goal in as many games.
Isaac Olaofe was on target in the 82nd minute as Sutton United were beaten 3-2 by Rochdale at Crown Oil Arena in Greater Manchester.
The Millwall loanee, a second half substitute, scored his first goal in League Two exactly a week ago.
